I hope you found part I of the personal statement series helpful. If you haven’t gotten a
chance to read through part I where I discussed the theme-based personal statement, take
a minute to check it out here. In today’s post, I’m going
to talk about the “slice of life” college essay. What I see a lot of students trying to do in
their college essays is jam WAY too much in. They want to cover everything they’ve
accomplished in high school. This is exactly what your activity sheet is for.

Last week, thanks to my brother, I went to Jay-Z’s opening night performance at the Barclays Center and have to say I was blown away. It wasn’t so much his actual singing that blew me away; he was utterly amazing, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve seen him in concert before so it wasn’t “the most epic thing ever” to hear him in concert again. What blew me away was “his moment.”
